Green Therapy

Green Therapy

Shinrin-yoku, known as forest therapy, originated in Japan in 1982. The term “Shinrin-Yoku” translates to “forest bath” or “forest bathing” and is a remarkable form of evidence-based therapy. This practice has been gaining global popularity, with countries like South Korea creating entire therapeutic forests for individuals seeking peace. Research indicates that engaging in Green Therapy can lower blood pressure and reduce the concentration of stress hormones such as cortisol in the body. Shinrin-yoku is founded on three key principles:

Yugen refers to the profound appreciation for the beauty of the world around us, evoking deep emotions that often escape description.

Komorebi, which means “sunlight leaking through trees,” describes how sunlight dances through the leaves overhead. This natural interplay fosters relaxation and a sense of peace.

Wabi Sabi celebrates the beauty found in imperfection and the transient nature of life.

These principles, combined with the physical movement through the forest, engaging your senses, and inhaling the natural essential oils and oxygen present in the forest air, work harmoniously to help quiet the mind, alleviating ruminations, worries, and circular thinking. This ultimately leads to a reduction in symptoms associated with stress and anxiety. As a clinical social worker, I have worked in various therapeutic environments and clinical settings. Each form of therapy holds its value, but Green Therapy resonates with me on a personal level. We invite you to join our guided forest sessions and experience this transformative practice.
