Lake Morton

Strolling with Royalty

  • Lake Morton is the home of Lakeland’s beloved Swans. While Lakeland has had swans since the 1920’s, they died out in 1950 and a pair of mute swans were gifted by Queen Elizabeth II on February 8, 1957. Swans are a staple to this area; you can find Swan symbols all over lakeland.
  • You can choose to walk with the royal birds, ducks, ibis and many other water fowl, or you can choose to walk the sidewalk on the outside of the lake. It is about a mile walk near historical homes, most of which were built in the 1920’s.
  • Lakeland Public library overlooks the lake and always has events going on. In the same parking lot, is the Polk Museum of Art. With the perk of free entry, it is definitely worth walking through the museum. The art changes so if you have been once, check it out again to see who is being featured. There is even a room dedicated to art work of Polk County students.
  • You are welcome to feed our winged friends, but remember that cracked corn, oats, bird seed, frozen peas, chopped lettuce, and sliced grapes are the best option to keep them healthy!
